Collecting antique electric fans is an interesting and challenging hobby, especially for fans made in the early years after its invention, c.1885, when companies' earliest designs made use of interesting open motors and brass blades devoid of any protective cage.

Offline I am going to see a couple of fans in the AM. The guy doesn't really do email (has to go to the library) and he gave me the 'numbers' (V106536 and 272614-1 and Form AS1). There is a 49X492 in the gallery that is a 3 blade Vortalex.

A 49X491 should be similar? What's it worth? I don't want it personally and it would be for resale. He has some other roadside GE CF as well.

Offline Tom, let me see if I can keep my Xs, 1s and 9s straight. A 49X491 is a 12' Quiet blade, any year. A 78X191 is a 12' Vorty, at least the 3 wing black and silver ones. I would think the 1940-41 four wing black and silver 12' Vorty would also have that number.

(Probably not so; see below) The 12' Vortalex shown in this link- is actually a 12' Quiet Blade with a four wing Vorty blade stuck on. Remember that a four wing Vorty has a carrying handle and the data tag is on the rim of the base instead of on top of the motor because the handle was in the way. Three wing Vortys have the data plate on top of the motor.

Big difference between the 12' Quiet Blade and 12' Vorty is that the QB has separate steel struts that insert INTO the front of the motor housing. The Vortys have wire struts made as part of the cage and they mount to the SURFACE of the front of the motor. The last version of the QB has what looks to be a Vorty cage but it uses separate struts and keeps the data plate on top of the motor and does not have a carrying handle. On ebay yesterday was this fan It is a 1940 Vorty with a Quiet Blade blade. Note the wire struts as part of the cage, the data plate on the base. I do note that the Cat.

Is 78X593 which is different from the original 3 wing Vorty, 78X191. The numbers that guy gave you don't mean much to me but the Form AS is from 1936-37 and predates any GE Vortalexes. Just remember that a 49X491 is a 12' Quiet Blade A 78X191 is a 12' early Vorty 3 wing dating no earlier than 1938. The last 1940-41 Quite blade used a cage and cage badge that looks nearly identical to the Vorty cage and badge. The Vorty never had a round GE badge as do the earlier Quiet Blade models.
